For more than 40 years (1972), the Coo power station has occupied a central place in our energy mix. It is an essential link in meeting the growing needs for flexibility caused by the energy transition. Its maximum capacity is 1080 MW.
Pumped storage represents the only means of current large-scale storage. In Belgium, the Coo power station is therefore essential to the balance of the network. The turbines can be started at any time to compensate for a sudden drop in production or to absorb excess electricity. Thus, when demand is too low, it stores the electricity produced elsewhere, in order to restore it during peaks in consumption.
